Payday loans Toronto: borrowing in Canada’s most expensive city

Toronto rents leave little room for a surprise bill. Here is how payday loans work for Torontonians, what they cost, and the city programs worth checking first.

Toronto is home to about 2.8 million people (2021 Census), and for many of them rent takes the largest share of every paycheque. When a dental bill or a TTC pass renewal lands two days before payday, a small loan can bridge the gap. Toronto residents apply online with Ontario-licensed lenders, and funds arrive by Interac e-Transfer.

A Toronto exampleDaniel rents in Scarborough and is paid $1,450 every second Friday. A $380 vet bill can’t wait. Under Ontario’s rule he could borrow up to $725, but he takes $400. The most it can cost is $56, so $456 comes out on payday. He checks first that his rent debit clears before the loan payment does.

Toronto borrowers are covered by Ontario’s payday loan rules: at most $14 per $100, half your net pay, and two business days to cancel.

Toronto-specific things to know

  • Many paydays, many dates. Toronto has a large share of hourly, gig and shift workers whose pay dates move. Make sure the loan due date matches the day your pay actually lands.
  • Rent comes first. If repaying the loan would put your rent at risk, call your landlord before you borrow. A late-rent plan is usually cheaper than a payday loan.
