Payday loans Alberta: repaid in instalments, not one hit

Alberta is the only province that builds instalments into every payday loan. That changes how the loan feels on payday and how much it costs per year.

Albertans can apply online for payday loans from lenders licensed by the Government of Alberta. Since 2016, Alberta has required every payday loan to be repaid over at least 42 days in instalments, instead of the single lump sum used in most provinces.

What an Alberta payday loan looks like

Say you borrow $500 and are paid every two weeks. The most it can cost is $70, for $570 in total. Instead of one $570 debit, Alberta rules spread it over at least three paydays, so each payment is about $190. Because the loan runs at least 42 days, the APR at the full $14 fee is about 122%, much lower than a two-week loan.

Why the 42-day rule matters

Lump-sum repayment is what pushes many borrowers into a second loan. Spreading payments over several paydays leaves more of each paycheque for rent and groceries. It is still an expensive loan, but it is less likely to start a cycle.

If a payment bounces

The lender can charge a one-time fee for each cheque or pre-authorized debit that doesn’t clear, and interest of 2.5% a month on late amounts. These are on top of the cost of borrowing, so call the lender before the payment date if you know you will be short.

Cancelling

You have two business days after signing to cancel. Return the money and you owe no fees or penalties.
