Payday loans Pickering: changed your mind? You have two days

Ontario gives every payday borrower two business days to cancel at no cost. Here is exactly how that works, with a Pickering example.

Pickering has about 99,000 residents (2021 Census) on the Lake Ontario shore at the western edge of Durham Region, home to a large nuclear generating station and the fast-growing Seaton community. Pickering residents apply online with Ontario-licensed lenders, with funds sent by e-Transfer.

A Pickering exampleDevon borrows $500 on a Monday to fix his car. On Tuesday his mechanic finds the problem is covered by warranty. Because he’s inside Ontario’s two-business-day cooling-off period, he tells the lender in writing that he’s cancelling and sends back the $500. He pays nothing else: no fee, no interest, no reason needed.

Pickering borrowers are covered by Ontario’s payday loan rules: at most $14 per $100, half your net pay, and two business days to cancel.

Pickering-specific things to know

  • Count business days. The two days don’t include weekends or holidays. A loan signed on Friday can be cancelled until the end of Tuesday.
  • Cancel in writing, return the money. Keep a copy of your cancellation notice and proof you returned the funds.
