Payday loans in London, Ontario: what to know before you borrow

London is a hospital town, a university town and a manufacturing town at once. If you’re short before payday, here’s how payday loans work in the Forest City, and the local help to look at first.

Short answer

Yes. London residents can apply online for payday loans of $100 to $1,500 from Ontario-licensed lenders, usually funded by Interac e-Transfer. Ontario’s rules apply: the cost is capped at $14 per $100, a loan can be no more than half your net pay, and you have two business days to cancel. Ontario Works in London is delivered by the City of London, which can help with emergency costs.

How payday loans work in London

London residents apply online with Ontario-licensed lenders and are covered by Ontario’s Payday Loans Act. With a large health care sector, Western University and Fanshawe College, and plenty of rentals near campus and downtown, the city has a lot of shift workers and students. Both groups can borrow, but each needs to watch how its income actually lands.

What’s different about borrowing in London

Student income. OSAP and other student funding usually arrives in lump sums, not as regular pay. Most payday lenders want recurring income, so a part-time job’s pay is what they’ll count.

Shift workers and premiums. If your pay swings with nights and weekends, use your lowest recent cheque to work out whether the repayment fits.

Renting near campus. Many leases near Western and Fanshawe start in September. A payday loan for a first and last month’s deposit is expensive. Ask Ontario Works about housing supports first.

A Byron example

Kayla, a personal support worker, takes home between $1,050 and $1,300 every two weeks. She plans around $1,050, which gives her a limit of $525. She borrows $400 for a vet bill and repays at most $456.

An illustration with an invented borrower. Your limit and cost depend on your own pay and lender.
