How to choose an instant payday loans company: 10 checks before you apply
Searching for an instant payday loans company brings up hundreds of sites that look almost identical. Some are licensed lenders, some are brokers, some are lead sellers, and a few are scams built to collect banking logins. These ten checks take about five minutes and protect you from the worst of them.

Short answer
To choose a safe instant payday loans company in Canada, check that it holds a payday lending licence in your province, shows the full cost before you sign, charges nothing upfront, gives you a written agreement with your cancellation rights, and has a real Canadian address and phone number. Look the licence number up on your provincial regulator’s website before you share any banking details.
The ten-point payday lender check
Licensed in your province
The licence must be from your province, not just “licensed in Canada”. In Ontario, search the Consumer Protection Ontario. In BC, check Consumer Protection BC.
Lender or broker, clearly stated
A broker or matching service, like Jessica’s House, should say plainly that it doesn’t lend. Ontario licenses payday loan brokers too.
Cost in dollars before you sign
You should see the total cost of borrowing as a dollar figure and an APR, and it can’t exceed $14 per $100.
Nothing to pay upfront
No application, insurance, processing or “first payment” fee before you get the money. Ever.
A real Canadian address and phone
Look it up. A registered office in a Canadian province, and a phone number someone answers during business hours.
A written agreement you can keep
It should list your cancellation rights, the due date and what a missed payment costs, and you should get a PDF copy.
One loan at a time
A lender that offers a second payday loan while the first is open, or a “renewal” for a fee, is breaking provincial rules.
Clear on your data
A privacy policy that says who your information is shared with, and an honest way to opt out of marketing.
Respectful collections
No threats of arrest, no calls to your employer about the debt, and no contact with your family or friends about it.
A complaints process
A named contact for complaints, and the name of the regulator to escalate to if the lender doesn’t resolve it.
Lenders, brokers and lead generators: the difference
A direct lender lends its own money, decides on your application, and signs the agreement with you.
A broker or matching service takes your application and connects you with one or more lenders. You still sign with the lender, and the lender’s licence is what governs your loan. Jessica’s House works this way. We’re paid by partners, not by you.
A lead generator collects your details and sells them, sometimes to several companies at once, which is why some people get a burst of calls after applying on the wrong site. A trustworthy service tells you who receives your information. See our privacy policy for exactly how we handle yours.
What “instant” should and shouldn’t mean
A good instant payday loans company is fast because its systems are good: automated bank verification, quick decisions and e-Transfer funding during business hours. It isn’t fast because it skips the affordability check. If a company approves you without confirming your income, it hasn’t checked whether the loan will leave you short next payday, and a licensed lender is required to check.
For realistic timing, read instant payday loans, hour by hour. For how your money arrives, see e-Transfer payday loans.
How to complain about a payday loan company
Start with the lender in writing, and keep a copy. If it isn’t resolved, contact your provincial regulator. That’s Consumer Protection Ontario, Consumer Protection BC, Alberta’s Consumer Investigations Unit, Saskatchewan’s FCAA, the Manitoba Consumer Protection Office, FCNB in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia’s Service Nova Scotia, or the PEI and NL consumer offices. Each province page on our site links to the right one.
Questions people ask
How do I know if a payday loan company is legit?
Look up its licence number on your provincial regulator’s website, confirm it has a Canadian address and phone number, and make sure it never asks for money upfront. Legitimate lenders also show the full cost before you sign.
Is Jessica’s House a payday loan company?
We’re a free matching service, not a lender. We send your application to lending partners, who connect you with lenders licensed in your province. You sign with the lender directly.
What should I do if I already paid an upfront fee?
Stop all contact and payments, call your bank to try to reverse the payment, change any passwords you shared, and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and your local police.
Lenders that already pass the ten checks
Every lender we introduce you to is licensed in your province and shows the full cost upfront. Applying is free.
