Payday loans in Alberta: the 42-day instalment rule explained
Alberta is the only province where a payday loan can’t be due on your next payday. Since 2016, every Alberta payday loan has had to run at least 42 days and be repaid in instalments. That changes the maths, and usually for the better.

Short answer
Payday loans in Alberta are licensed by the provincial government and must be repaid in instalments over at least 42 days and no more than 62. The cost is capped at $14 per $100. If you’re paid every two weeks or more often, the loan has to be split over at least three paydays. You can cancel within two business days at no cost.
| Cost cap | $14 per $100 (the federal limit, lower than Alberta’s former $15) |
|---|---|
| Term | At least 42 days and no more than 62 days |
| Instalments | At least 3 pay periods if paid every 2 weeks or more often; at least 2 otherwise |
| Cooling-off period | 2 business days, with no fees or penalties |
| Other loans | No new payday loan from a lender while one is outstanding |
| Missed payments | One dishonoured-payment fee, plus up to 2.5% a month on overdue amounts |
| Licensing | Required from the Government of Alberta for every lender serving Albertans |
What an Alberta payday loan looks like in practice
$600 in Calgary, paid every two weeks
Maximum cost: $84, so $684 in total. Instead of one $684 debit, it’s split over three paydays: about $228 each, six weeks apart from first to last.
Because the loan runs at least 42 days, the annual rate at the full $14 fee is about 122%, far below the 365% of a two-week loan elsewhere.
Spreading the repayment is the whole point. A lump-sum payment is what usually forces a second loan. Three smaller payments leave most of each paycheque intact.
Why the 42-day rule can still catch you out
Instalments make a loan easier to carry, but they also mean you’re in debt for six weeks instead of two. Before you sign, check that all three payments fit your budget. If your hours vary, as they do for many oil-patch contractors, hospitality staff and seasonal workers in Alberta, plan around your lowest likely paycheque, not your best.
You can repay early. Ask the lender how the cost is reduced if you do, and get the answer in writing.
