Who can apply for a loan online

Lenders set their own criteria, but most look for the same basics:

  • You’re at least 18 (19 in some provinces), and you live in Canada.
  • You have regular income: a job, self-employment, a pension or ongoing benefits. Many lenders want at least three months with the same source.
  • You have a Canadian chequing account that your income is deposited into, and that you’ve had for a few months.
  • You aren’t currently behind on another payday loan with the same lender.

Bad credit, a past consumer proposal or a discharged bankruptcy doesn’t automatically rule you out. Payday lenders put more weight on whether the repayment fits your next paycheque. Personal loan lenders look at your credit file more closely, and some specialize in rebuilding credit. Nobody can promise approval. If you’re turned down, our guide to why loans get refused explains what to change before you try again.

Payday loan or personal loan: which one you’re applying for

The amount you choose decides the product. $1,500 or less is treated as a payday loan, repaid in one payment on your next payday (in instalments in Alberta), at no more than $14 per $100. Above $1,500, partners look for personal loans repaid monthly over 6 to 60 months, at no more than 35% APR. If a personal loan fits your budget, it’s usually cheaper overall than renewing payday loans.

Applying online: questions

Is there a fee to apply?

No. Applying through Jessica’s House is free, and so is an offer from a licensed lender. The only cost is the cost of borrowing set out in your loan agreement if you sign one.

Will applying hurt my credit score?

No. Sending this form doesn’t create a credit inquiry. If a lender needs a hard credit check before making a final offer, it should tell you first.

Why do you ask for my income and rent?

The law requires lenders to check that a loan is affordable. In Ontario, for example, a payday loan can’t be more than half your net pay. Sharing accurate numbers up front means the offer you see is one you can actually get.

What if I live in Quebec, Yukon, the Northwest Territories or Nunavut?

Payday loans aren’t offered there, but you can still apply. Partners will look for personal loans at or below 35% APR.

Can I cancel after I accept?

Yes, within your province’s cooling-off period, which is two business days in Ontario and BC, for example. You return the money and pay nothing more. Your lender has to explain how to cancel in the agreement.
