Payday loans Calgary: how Alberta’s instalments fit your pay

In Alberta, a payday loan is repaid over several paydays, not all at once. Here is what that looks like on a Calgary paycheque, including a monthly one.

Quick answer

Yes. Calgary residents can borrow up to $1,500 online from an Alberta-licensed lender, at no more than $14 per $100, repaid over 42 to 62 days. If you’re paid monthly, your loan is split over at least two paydays.

Calgary has about 1.3 million residents (2021 Census), and many work in energy, finance, transportation and construction, where contract roles and monthly pay are common. Calgarians apply online with Alberta-licensed lenders and receive funds by Interac e-Transfer.

A Calgary exampleJordan is a contract drafter paid once a month. On the 3rd, he needs $900 for a car repair. The most it can cost is $126, for $1,026 in total. Because he’s paid monthly, Alberta rules spread that over at least two paydays, so he pays $513 at the end of this month and $513 at the end of next. Stretched over about two months, the APR at the full fee is roughly 85%, not the 365% of a two-week loan.

Calgary-specific things to know

  • Count every instalment date. Two or three smaller debits are easier than one big one, but each must clear. Mark them in your calendar.
  • Contract gaps. If your contract might end before the last instalment, don’t borrow against pay you can’t count on.
