St. Catharines has about 137,000 residents (2021 Census) and is the largest city in the Niagara Region. Many residents work in hospitality, tourism and wineries, where hours rise in summer and fall away after Thanksgiving. St. Catharines residents apply online with Ontario-licensed lenders and receive funds by e-Transfer.

A St. Catharines exampleKayla serves at a restaurant in Niagara-on-the-Lake. In July, her pay plus deposited tips is $1,500 every two weeks; in January it’s $850. A January loan is capped at half her net pay, $425. She borrows $300 for a hydro bill, pays at most $42, and starts setting aside $50 a paycheque each summer for the next winter.

St. Catharines borrowers are covered by Ontario’s payday loan rules: at most $14 per $100, half your net pay, and two business days to cancel.

St. Catharines-specific things to know

  • Cash tips don’t count. Lenders see deposits in your bank account. Tips you keep in cash won’t show as income.
  • Plan for November to April. If your hours drop every winter, a small summer savings habit can replace the loan entirely.
